Thursday 28th September - The First "Firsty Thursday" Session @ Uni Arms

Post  Scott_Fryer on Wed 20 Sep 2017, 12:35

This has soon come around..  the inaugural session of the Thursday New People/New To Games/Everybody session will begin a week on Thursday ( 28th September , 7pm onwards... upstairs room of the University Arms )

The idea is to have a much more "turn up and play" feel, and I'll be making myself available to anybody with any trepidation about approaching a large group of strangers, or anybody who may have a passing interest in what the modern boardgame scene is all about, but are concerned about not be able to play/understand the rules etc. As always though everyone is welcome  Very Happy

In either event, feel free to collar me, I'll be fairly obvious by the ridiculously oversized hockey jersey featuring the #31 on its back. I'll do my best to make you feel welcome, and I'll be arranging/running/teaching a selection of classic gateway games,  in addition to the clubs library of games, I'll be bringing the following along :-

Ticket To Ride
King Of Tokyo
Sheriff Of Nottingham
Tsuro
Forbidden Island

Hope to see some of you there!
Scott

Also worth mentioning that we don't have exclusive use of the room on a Firsty Thursday (yet). So if people are already on tables - just ask if they would like to try a board game Wink

I will be there with some lighter intro games.

This is a great idea! I've been to a couple of the Tuesday evening sessions and it can definitely be a little impenetrable on the night. I understand completely that people just want to get on with playing a game on Tuesdays, so I don't have any hard feelings there, but a session where noobs are welcomed in and assured a place at a table will be great fun.
Count me in!

I'm expecting to be there for this. Happy to stay out of a game to begin with and look out for late arrivals.

Thanks Sam, that'll probably be a big help. I doubt I'll make it tonight, but will definitely be along from around 5.30ish Thursday

For those looking for us, we are downstairs in the rear half of the room, rather than upstairs.

I really enjoyed it... had some great games and met some nice new faces.

We had 4 tables each headed by a member of the club. On the table I was at... I showed a group how to play Pendemic. I then lost at Junk Art and Colt Express. Did win Codenames with Kendra - but no idea how...

Peter Pan... not linked to star!

Hopefully some of the new folks will let us know there thoughts so future Firsty Thursday can be tailored better...

Smile That's what makes Codenames such a great, but hugely stressful game. What's blatantly obvious to you is completely lost on your teammates!

I really enjoyed last night, a few logistical problems with tables at first, but once we relocated to the conservatory, things improved quickly.

Starting originally with a group of 4, we rapidly expanded to 7, and played a couple of games of Tsuro, and Love Letter. The arrival of an 8th, and the availability of another table, meant we split into 2 groups of 4, one of which played Ticket To Ride, and the other Unspeakable Words, and King Of Tokyo, all of which went down well.

Looking forward to the next one.

Yes I enjoyed last night too, despite the slightly chaotic start! Good to see a lot of new faces, and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening as far as I could tell. The table I was on certainly did, we played some good games, all of which proved popular - Dream Home, Century Spice Road, Sushi Go Party and Bears vs Babies.

Overall I thought that, despite the initial problems, it was a great session for new members - everyone was welcomed, and I could tell that extra effort was being made to ensure that the new people were very much included in the games they were playing.

To echo Scott above, I'm also looking forward to the next one!

Somehow that must have been flipped over when I wasn't looking! It is of course linked, just as Plane is linked to Airfix... Very Happy

Yep it was good, still a bit intimidating walking into a room full of people who know each other, but people were friendly and once we got in groups it was easier to chat. Games were fun and a good variety, so would be good to play again to solidify the rules in my head!

You will be sick of all my questions by the end of today! So any ideas how we could improve this (reduce the intimidation factor) for future Firsty Thursday meetings - would it be better to get more 'newer' members running the event? Or do you think it is just always going to be intimidating walking into a room of folks people don't know?

For me as an old timer it was nice just meeting new faces - I know some had been to meetings before but I only really knew Scott, Sol, Samuel, Sam and Jen and each hosted a separate table...

Again appreciate any advice - because ultimately the Firsty Thursdays are for new people... so any way we can help please shout... anyone else too!
