I played it when I joined a London club for a day. It lasted over 3 hours but that did include explaining the rules to 4 who'd never played it before. Regardless, I'm in. Should be there for 7ish.

Over 3 hours seems excessive, even with newbies, but i can see it going towards the 3 hour mark. Anyhoo, thats enough interest for me so i shall be bringing it.

I've read the rules to shogun. The tower intrigues me.

Just in case you didn't see the headline - we are at the University tower for this week due to a gig on at the Redhouse. I'll be down shortly with a selection.

Steve - the game I've played before, which I was on about last night, isn't Shogun but Ikusa.

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/221/ikusa

According to BGG - The game was originally published as Shogun and was later changed to Samurai Swords due to a name conflict with James Clavell's Shogun. Ikusa is the latest iteration of the game.

Not only did Ikusa use the Shogun name, the map and much of the gameplay is the same; the bidding, round choices, buildings and placement of armies are all there. The main differences (as far as I can remember) are that there is no scoring, the winner is the army which takes over a certain proportion of the board, this can lead to players being eliminated early on. There are also different strength soliders plus the ability to hire Ronin and Ninjas. The most significant difference is the lack of a battle tower!

Really enjoyed playing Shogun last night though and I'd be keen to give it another go soon.

That's the version I remember playing. The tower was unfamiliar and I thought I was losing it.

I remember playing the 1986 version:

Who wants to play without the tower? Thats the best bit. Sounds to me like Ikusa would go on a bit.
I'd be happy to bring shogun again soon.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Aneurin for sorting the University Arms.

FWIW I thought the bigger room was a great venue - probably the best ive played at. Light, airy, plenty of chairs & tables. Also good beer and I think the cheapest pint for a while too.

Anyone else think it'd be good to play there again?

They ordinarily want £20 for the privilege. Small room's free, that big 'un's their money-maker. We just got lucky. I also like that in the RedHouse we aren't just hidden away in a room like nerdy goblins.

I like that we have as long as we need in the redhouse. I know i was playing a longer game, but i felt a bit rushed at the end.
