You reckon la la land was better than Manchester by the sea?
I found Moonlight to be very arty farty and slow but enjoyed the character development in it.

Late reply, but: I was thinking more between the two films that were announced as best picture Laughing But I do think La La Land was pretty special. Though, of every movie I watched, I still think Your Name did the most to me. But that didn't even get nominated for the best animated film!

Recent films:

Lost City Of Z is a cool piece of history about an explorer with a pretty incredible life. It's not really an exciting film but if you're in a slow mood and can be patient for what felt like three hours I would certainly say there is a lot to get out of this one.

Best moment:
Spoiler:
"A man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's a heaven for?" Cut to Percy meeting his fate.

Kong: Skull Island's script pretty much washed off of me, but its set pieces and environmental design and camerawork and plotting really stood out compared to any other film I've watched recently. You can see the ambition and passion here, except perhaps in the dialogue and characters. Overall, this one seriously surprised me, because the trailer was crap. An impressive and memorable monster film.

Best moment:
Spoiler:
Hard to say. So many moments come to mind but they're mostly little cool visual things, like shot of Samuel Jackson's smirking face behind a wall of flames, or the camera rotating as it follows a spinning missile as it falls to the ground.

Power Rangers, ha, wow, this one was good! Cringey, for sure, but if you can look past that there really was way more to the characters than you would except. It was pretty good at playing with expectations, too. The costumes look way better in the motion than they do in stills. I think nostalgia and low expectations had something to do with my liking this one, but I still genuinely want there to be a sequel.

Best moment:
Spoiler:
They do get hit by the train. I didn't expect that! That's the moment I thought "Okay, this film is trying here, let's see what it can do." The moment they all transform together and the silly superhero group shots that followed also got me weirdly hyped.

Life was kind of exciting while I was watching it but as soon as I starting thinking about it I went off it pretty quickly. Like the opening and the ending, still, though.

Viceroy's House is set in a period of history filled with conflict and human drama, and managed to make it pretty boring. Make me want to learn more about the partition of India, though.

Thanks for these Sam. I rarely go to the cinema, but I watch loads of films and am always looking for new stuff. I actually rent dvds (proper old school I know) so I'm 6 months or so behind. If anyone sees anything good, please let me know and I'll put it on my list!

Paul, be careful, if you're giving away things like that you might want to use more spoiler tags! Laughing

I saw Taxi Tehran last week, which was excellent. The Big Short, Hell or High Water and Hunt for the Wilderpeople are my favourites from what I've seen so far this year.

Same! Was hilarious and almost had me crying at one point. The opening scene of the lass squeezing her own tits threw me off for a moment but it all made perfect sense in the end Smile

Saw GoTG2 at The Light cinema (it is for sure the best cinema in Sheffield bar the IMAX at Cineworld).

So bloodly Disney.

I'm really enjoying The Light cinema in town. Between there, Curzon and Showroom we have an excellent choice of city centre cinemas.

Anyway, recently I've seen:

Thor: Ragnarok - not just a funny superhero film but an actual comedy. The Planet Hulk-lite still leaves me wanting a PH film.

Bladerunner 2049 - a masterpiece. Possibly the best film I've seen at the cinema. Slow, atmospheric, builds on the original superbly and some excellent turns from Gosling and Ford.

Who (other than Aneurin) is going to the midnight showing of The Last Jedi? I haven't booked anything yet.

I'm not a fan of Gosling, but still thought 2049 was one of the best films I've seen for a while. Brilliant aesthetics.

Go on your own. Flying solo at the cinema is a favourite simple pleasure of mine, doubly so if it's during the day.

I saw IT on my own the other week. Bliss.
