Tuesday 24th @ THE SCHOLAR

Post  Aneurin on Wed 18 Sep 2013, 11:12

Jeff informed me last night that the last of the Redhouse Gigs is happening on this date (then it's ours every Tuesday from then till eternity) so we won't be playing at the Redhouse. Seemed the consensus was to try Uni Arms again so I will try and book the room and keep you informed here. If I can't get it for free will probably be the Scholar again...

I tired University arms but they were being an arse and not picking up the phone... I can't be bothered to walk across (busy organising my talks for York next week) so have organised the Scholar for Tuesday...

For those that don't know already...

The Scholar
13 London Road,
S2 4LA (over the road from the Sainsbury's - the used to be BED nightclub)

There is an upstairs area to play in - dedicated to us... and they lay on free food...

Two weeks in a row, does that mean you're in good or bad books?!

I'll be there a little later than usual, probably 8ish. I've had another solitaire play of CO2 and I think I've got the hang of it so I'll bring it down - anyone fancy a game?

Oh and Adam, I work in town so if you want to arrange dropping off Agricola with me at some point I can pass it on.

Ha!... I seem to be in good books at the moment... It's usually unsociable work shifts that mean I can't come down more often though, but I'm covering someone's early shift this week.. so yay!

I'll be down 7ish - happy to play whatever!...

Coming solo! No games, either, cause it's hard enough to remember to bring dinner with me...

An insightful game of Spartacus today, a fable in board game form, the vital moral of which being that screwing people over, though a delight to being with, will, in the end, remain fun and profitable.

Had a blast with The Resistance, too. Much more fun as a spy. Less confusion and guessing, more understanding but also more opposition and more control demanded of you, so a nicer challenge, as well as a sense of camaraderie, all of which the Resistance members get to a lesser degree in certain situations but all of which are inherent to playing as a spy. I'd like to play a few more games as a resistance member, though, to check. I still haven't played a game the spies didn't win.

I wonder why anyone could trust me after my brief but noticeable hesitation of twenty seconds before telling the table what James's card was. Why would anyone but a spy need to think about the answer? I couldn't work out if it was better to try and lie convincingly (the moment for that passed rapidly), or sacrifice one of us to for trust in the other. Perhaps Canadian No. 2 forgot about that or I just came across as more sympathetic in the bickering between me an Karl, but we got there in the end (high five, spies).

That's an interesting moral to take from Spartacus! I think you took advantage of the short game well but wouldn't be able to sustain iron a long game.

I do agree with you there. Mike illogically sending me into the arena twice sure helped too.

I felt sure I was going to skewer Spartacus with a well aimed javelin, but alas, it was not meant to be. Still, the 5 guards episode is still making me chuckle now and has officially replaced my Monty Pythonesque 'runaway' maneuver as most embarrassing Spartacus moment.
