Tuesday 19th Gaming

Post  Aneurin on Sat 16 Aug 2014, 08:42

Right - still not found my wooden bits for Neiuw Amsterdam but I will bring substitutes so we can play it... Also the designer has emailed me the expansion to play-test for him...

On a different note - if anyone would like to have an MRI brain scan on the morning of Thursday 28th August and take part in a Derren Brown Style show in the city centre in September PM me...

I'm in Edinburgh for the week so unfortunately will miss Tuesday night.

However, whilst at the festival I'm hoping to go and see this stand-up show about board games. The same guy is also organising a "comedians play Pandemic" event, which sadly I'll have to miss. I'll report back!

Would like to play something with some depth I can get lost in for a few hours. Anyone setting up something like that, sign me up. Last week I played Ultimate Werewolf and Anomia, so... yeah.

I'll be bringing Greed, plus a few others that haven't seen the table for a while. However, as usual, I'll be happy to play anything.

Always, but wary of losing my unbeaten 'streak'.
Happy to play any of them, might not be a late one for me though, I've got post festival fatigue

I have both of those Evan. I'm afraid I don't have them today, but I can bring one another week if you remind me.

I have with me today: Gravwell, Mascarade, Samurai Sword and a new game called La Boca. The last one's a 3D puzzle game where you work in teams to build a specific pattern out of coloured blocks. Very simple, yet effective.

Everything Aneurin and Karl mentioned sounds good. Think I'm most interested in Le Harve. I'll try and read the rules for that one unless we decide on something else.

Le Havre it is! It's long, probably 3+ hours by the time we've been through the rules so probably best to crack on with it straight away. I'll aim to be there and setting up at 7.

I did rather like Le Havre, though it took me a while to get into it. Everything about the theme is really solid and there seems to be plenty of room for varied strategies. Aneurin mentioned the annoyance of having to keep track of many buildings around the table, but I don't think it was a big issue because most buildings fit into straightforward roles (production, upgrading, wharfs, etc) and you just have to remember which building role is out for which resources, and then keep track of the few less straightforward buildings that might fit into your strategy. It does have the typical worker placement downside, which is to say it is a great problem solving exercise but you have to solve the problem a tiny bit at a time a wait for other players to solve their own problems in between. I wonder if it would feel better with less players. I'd certainly be up for another game next time someone gets it out. Next time, though, I think I need something I can get my teeth into, but, qualification: also with lots of attacking and screwing over and misery (not Spartacus

, but speaking of which, I found this Top 50 Board Games video by a Rock Paper Shotgun writer with a great accent and his 7 year old daughter as his "director", which has the aforementioned game at no. 1, which did make me want to play some of the rest of his top games (at least until I saw Talisman was no. 3 (ffs)))).

Rich, there are a few Sunday sessions coming up soon, so... Battlestar Galactica?

Re: Tuesday 19th Gaming

I didn't mean specifically Le-Havre I meant the direction in which Uwe Rosenburg big box games are generally heading...

Don't get me wrong I really enjoy them but....

Agircola, Le-Havre, Ora-et-Labora, Caverna

Going up that list you get more and more specific buildings & actions to think about and how they interact with you - and will do in the future. Agricola was very streamlined - everyone sharing the same 10-20 actions (turned it into a bit of a Maths puzzle but hey) means minimal reading and therefore downtime... Le-Havre and Ora-et-labora introduced cards/buildings you can all buy from a stock that constitute the main actions - if you had a strategy which relied on a particular building and then it's suddenly gone you had to spend ages thinking about what action to take now (is it worth using that building and paying the owner the cost, waiting for them to 'eventually' move their worker so you can get access to that important resource or going in a new direction). Caverna - mixed the two - had 10-20 shared actions and then all these buildings (Which dramatically affect these actions) as well... even more downtime...

I'm not a fan of downtime - and hope people think I am normally a quick player - But there are sooooo many choices in these newer Rosenburg games that even I on occasions last night felt uncomfortable as I re-analysed (for an absolute age) what I needed to do because the aim is to win (which I did).

Furthermore all the choices make it so daunting for new players - and whatever there are always good buildings combos that only experience will give you the foresight to take on. Having that experience makes the games boring and weighted if you introduce them to new players. I love Agricola but it's so dull when you know how to win (play the solo game and you soon learn) and watch people struggle to farm in the early turns...
