Tuesday 9th December

Post  Aneurin on Wed 03 Dec 2014, 10:05

As one gaming session ends I look forward to the next...
Steve - still up for Caverna before the Christmas fun the following week?
Anyone else want to do some Cave farming?

Aneurin, Steve, Karl, Evan

N.B. I haven't won a game yet... I prefer Agriocola Wink

Oh yeah, Cyclades! I'd forgotten that. I'm up for that. I don't have it though. I think Dave has it? And I've not read the rules.

Well, if we can track it down I'll have a look at the rules over the weekend and we can give it a crack. Smile

I've tracked down Cyclades - Dave has it,
however, he isn't coming on Tuesday and I'm not going on Sunday.
Liz, any chance you could take it off Dave's hands on Sunday to bring on Tuesday - meantime I'll get my head around the rules?

Yeah sure. Though I may dump it on Kes to take home and bring on Tuesday. Save me carrying it. Either way we'll manage.

I'm actually booked to play Cyclades on Tuesday, which has some crossover with Kemet (sort of). You could join us for that?

If you don't mind explaining the rules to me as we go, I'll never get chance to read them before Tues. Count me in though if there's a space.

I've not played before, not sure any of us have, so we can figure it out together. I think it's Sam, Paul and I playing and it does 5 so after Mike we have one spot left.

Hi all, really enjoyed the hidden role games last week and will probably be down again on Tues.

Happy to slot in to either game mentioned so far if there's a spare place, otherwise can bring something down. Betrayal at House On The Hill, anyone?

Re: Tuesday 9th December

Loved Cyclades. That auction mixed with area control is such an interesting combo. It's got me thinking about strategies.

Obviously controlling the auction and monster pool with priests and gold is key. Chances to actually move troops and ships come around rarely. If you want to play aggressively (my wont in any game) you should take advantage of those chances when the time comes, which means pouring gold into those extra units and moves. As in most games (and in life) you have to get that gold coming in. Apollo(n) seems acceptable to get an edge early, when auction costs are low, so you will quickly get a return on your investment, and opportunities for other Cornucopia are rare or risky. I figure I want to be lobbying Apollo a few turns in, when I have six or more coins to spare after an auction to dump a bunch of ships down and manoeuvre them to connect me to multiple islands (ideally connected to one hub island where I can build a port). If we can beat down just one player that makes the auction less competitive and cheaper (that's what the one island rule is supposed to counteract, I guess). If I can cruise for a few turns, grabbing cheap priests, philosophers and buildings when the chance arises, when I grab Ares with plenty of spare cash it shouldn't be too hard to dominate several islands in one turn.

Alternatively, rather than spreading out my fleet, I could keep them together in one armada, or even two. This would allow me to wreck individual enemy ships that had spread out as in the above strategy, and I could hop from island to island whilst seriously hurting my opponents ability to move around the board. The problem is that doing this relies on your getting Ares and Poseidon often throughout the game, which as we know is no easy feat.

I'm eager to play again. Next week, anyone?

Cyclades was really good and your strategy does sound solid. I wonder if it's a game where there's several ways to win, though, and which you go for depends on what opportunities come your way. I would like to play more.
