Christmas games

Post  paulyg on Thu 25 Dec 2014, 19:33

So, what games (if any) did Santa bring everybody?

I got Sheriff of Nottingham and Colt Express. I guess I must have been on the nice list this year!

My sister's boyfriend with good intentions bought me the QI board game. Thanks man, I appreciate it. Terrible game, though.

I don't expect board games from my board game ignorant family, so it was a nice surprise when I unwrapped a present from my 11 year old cousin to find Card's Against Humanity, which he had seen in a YouTube video. I wouldn't have got it for myself but it had us all laughing for an hour or so and everyone requested a second game later in the evening, so it was in a sense the board game that saved Christmas... from QI: the board game.

My brother picked up a game called Unexpected Treasures yesterday and gave it to me so I guess it counts.

Turned out to be quite a neat little set collection game. It's a bit like Kolejka, but without the queuing.

Nothing. Zip. Zero. However...I did get clothes and a new coat which means I don't have to spend my own money on these boring things and can buy more games. First up is Mysterium, which should come next week.

Splendor and Zombicide season 1 for me.... and my sister brought me back a cool looking set of Japanese flower Cards from Japan... with Japanese rules - (so there's a research project for me!)

...and the Adventure Time Card Wars game for my daughter (which looks like a pretty good fun kids game!)

Very Happy

I got a 1960's card game called Contraband, which my friend tells me is similar to 'Sheriff of Nottingham'.

Basically you get a hand of cards and then 'declare' to the customs official (one player is chosen at the start) your luggage. the customs official then decides to accept that and you pay the relevent tax, or reject it and they search the luggage- if you were lying you pay way more tax, but if you were telling the truth the customs official pays you compensation. You then pass your hand to the player on your left and it goes on.

It got a bit heated after a few drinks, but generally everyone enjoyed it.

That does sound quite similar to Sheriff of Nottingham! I'd give that a go some time (I enjoyed Sheriff of Nottingham, I think rather more than those with whom I played it).

Cool. Well I'll stick it in the car tomorrow in case there's a lull between games or something. Having said that looking at the thread it could be a busy one!

I got this just before Christmas and also enjoyed it more than the people I played it with. Maybe we should combine and attempt to play a game where everyone enjoys it as much as us?

So it was you that cursed us to 4 hours of Doomtown for 1 game - and people say TI3 is a long game - really enjoyed it though... be interesting to see what the expansions will add... normally LCG (or at least the ones I have) introduce new missions and stuff... I can't quite see what, other than new factions and extra cards for exisiting factions they could add to Doomtown to warrant an expansion every 6 months...

Yep, I really do think it could be a great 2-player LCG. Looks like the 'little' expansions are just going to add new cards but the bigger ones will add in extra mechanics. I think there's the possibility of expanding the role of 'jobs' (which none of us attempted last night) to perhaps be more Firefly-like. But I guess we'll see!
