I won't be there either for the following reasons (in no particular order) 1) I'm snowed in 2) Got college work to do 3) I was late out of work and haven't eaten yet 4) Aneurin's still butt-hurt about Twilight Imperium and I'm scared.

Will be there next week and possibly the Sunday session. Enjoy classic gaming.

Aneurin's not here Ellis! You're safe! Can't help with 1-3 though.

Tensions ran pretty high in those last rounds. Tom was trembling. He saw the flaming ruins of his once great metropolis. Good men, his friends, lay dead, all, from one end of the island to the other. Their red remains obscured the ground around his home. A single tear ran down his unmoving face.

Steve turned to me with empty eyes.

"How did this come to pass?" he asked. "What God could allow such a thing to happen?"

I put a reassuring hand on his shoulder. I pointed to the board.

"Ares. " I said "Ares, who allows the player, in this case Dave, to move an army from one island to another, assuming those islands are connected by fleets, at the cost of one coin." *

* This action may be taken multiple times provided the player has sufficient coin.

On a related topic: Cyclades has to be one of my top three games.

Cyclades is great fun, but I don't think I've seen a game with greater possibilty for a swing of events - I went from a commanding position in the lead, able to claim victory in my next go to being spanked all the way back into last place and losing the game to the guy immediately before me in the turn order. Was rather frustrating. Also highly entertaining - in all fairness it was a beautiful move Smile

I suppose the way to think about it isn't "I'm one metropolis and a building ahead of this guy", because every metropolis  or building your build also brings them closer to victory, as they also "have" one more metropolis... to steal from you. In our case, whilst we were all spending like crazy trying to stop each other winning, Dave, in the spirit of the game, saved his money for a turn (maybe two?) with Apollo, then spent it all on Ares and in one turn had his whole army on the board and plundered 75% of his win from me and Tom, also totally in the spirit of the game. Which is part of what makes it so intense and interesting. It's strategic until the very last turn. You can be "doing well", but you have to get there in the right way, and also continue to make the right moves until you actually win. This also means you can't discount anyone and have to consider every player and the whole board, as Dave helpfully demonstrated last night. For that reason I think it might be even better with three players, as four players is a lot for my small brain to keep track of.

Cyclades has a 1:1 plays to good-time ratio for me so far. One day I will get the hang of using the creatures as well.

Was it me?
