Friday 31st July - games in Greenhill

Post  paulyg on Wed 29 Jul 2015, 13:52

I'm being left to my own devices on Friday evening so wondered if anyone fancied popping over for some games? Could continue to attack my pile of unplayed games, play some old favourites, or whatever really... Anyone fancy it?

Alas, I don't think I can get a pass for this week. Sad

Yay / boo as appropriate!

A 18.30 - 19.00 start time sounds good to me. I might have to go to Nottingham tomorrow but I'll be back by then.

So, Tom & Sam, is there anything you particularly fancy playing? We could have a crack at something fairly meaty like Merchant of Venus or Dungeon Petz? Or I'm still yet to play my copy of Cyclades or dice-knocking co-op game Space Movers...

Anybody else fancy it? I guess it can count as a #GenCant event Smile

EDIT: Oh, or we could play Alchemists. Another heavy one!

I wish I could come and play Cyclades but I've got to go and stand in a park being, like, all cultural and stuff.

Standing in a park? The mind boggles! Are you down on Sunday? Could have a go at Cyclades then?

We'll be there on Sunday up to about 4.30. I'd be happy to play Cyclades then if you like.

Excellent. I've selected the usual big pile of games from the cupboards...

Read a bit about Alchemists. Sounds like a clever blend of genres. I'll read the rules on the bus ride over. I'm pretty mentally burned out so don't expect much competition from me!

Yep, it plays a bit like Dungeon Lords in some respects (the worker placement / turn phase elements) but with an aspect of deduction. I've only played it once (and I totally screwed up my deductions) so would be good to have another go!

It's not that intense, just takes a bit of getting used to. I liked it. (I won)

Alchemists: awesome. I love these thematic euro-games.

Lords of Scotland: bleh. The dull theme is so distractingly unrelated to the mechanics that to work out if I think this game is worth playing again I have to imagine I had been playing with cards without pictures on, as a purely abstract card game. I would even prefer it much more that way, I think, as at least it is congruent and understands itself and you remove the dreary tone of the artwork. The rules felt somehow slapdash. The game is playable and a little strategic and has a little potential for combos into big scores, buy didn't reach a level you couldn't achieve with a 52 card deck.

I find Alchemists really polarises people. I have played games where my 3 opponents hate it - and trust me that's not fun.
I really like it though - I think its relatively easy - and I am very impressed with the card recognition app. Happy to play more at the club - it doesn't get out often enough!

Interesting! Everyone I have played it with so far has really enjoyed it. Great game and I'll be looking to play it some more Smile
