I think we're being a bit cynical here, they are probably feeling the pressure with a lot of users moving to the internet and high street betting stores as well as the lack of a good reputation.
The possible downsides;
*Membership possibly required
*21 age restriction
*Could end up being short term, once they get what they want (publicity) they may decide to no longer invite us in for free
*May turn others off

Upsides
*Better acoustics
*Better space and tables
*Quieter
*Possibility of it staying open later if we want a late night gaming session
*Free parking

Anyway that's my two cents worth - I think it certainly worth a shot at least
Good list of pros and cons I think. It might also be a useful 'backup venue' if they're ok with us using it on an occasional/casual basis when we have trouble with one of our usual venues (i.e. not available to book) or want to organise something extra.

Potential upsides, we don't know until we try it.

I'm not being a bit cynical by the way, I'm being VERY cynical and it's completely my issue!! I think having alternatives is good and if people/the club want to go down that route then great. Instinctively it just doesn't feel right to me as I don't like casinos.

Completely understand and, from a subjective point of view,  I agree with you. Outside of Vegas I've never been to a casino, and in Vegas all I did was play the dime slots in order to get free beers!

I like the Uni Arms.

We just need 'fix' the speaker with some wire-cutters, plus, hire a door-man for our room, and it's the perfect venue!

I've only ever been in there once so here is my very limited take on this...

Membership is required and it takes approximately 5 minutes to process so there could well be a queue if a group of you turn up at once. You will need to take some form of ID with you and they will take a photograph of you as well. I seem to recall drinks as being on the expensive side so ask how much a pint of larger cost when you make enquiries. There is a dress code which is quite relaxed but you may get turned away for wearing trainers - so this is something else to check out.

No rucksack / bags are allowed in and they will ask you to hand it in and collect it on way out.

Parking is free but you need to remember to enter your number plate on a machine in the reception area if you don't want a ticket.

I'd like to think they'd relax some of those policies for a group coming in to play boardgames.

Ok so I've had some further correspondence from the Casino...

In short - on Tuesday evening only the bar area is avilable, the age restriction is 18+, you need membership but it's quick and free, we can take bags of games with us.

Kes has been to check out the place. His finding - The lighting is pretty bad in the bar area and not great for gaming.

So nothing official is setup but you are welcome to go and check it out if you cannot make Wednesday at the Uni arms.

N.b. The Poker room with the pro gaming tables is only available before 6pm. Could be useful for early afternoon weekend gaming if someone wants to organise a session.

Thanks to Kes for checking it out. He said to consider it as a 'sports bar' rather than casino.

I know membership of a casino was upsetting some - I forgot to add if you do go...

'you can enter as a "partial open door" customer and just sign in'

Ask for Amrik...

Yeah, you can also ask for Chris or Nick and both will know who we are. The receptionist was friendly and efficient so you can always ask her.
If people want to go down, if you give them a call, they will reserve table space for us
