My order of choice (normally)

7 - technology II (for a free tech - play late on when people are out if resources)
3 - Assembly (use to get the speaker token so you can get technology first next round - play very early so the secondary ability is useless to other players)
1 - leadership (get extra command counters - save some influence planets (to ensure max effect) and play late on to avoid people using the secondary ability).
4 - Production (play late on to limit effect of secondary - but no essential)
6 - warefare II (can be played at any time so earlier the better really as it makes a fleet better - no one uses the secondary so you are safe).
5 - Trade III (play late on to avoid people using trade goods that turn)
2 - Diplomacy II (use to annex a neutral planet - no real 'good' time to play)
8 - beaurocracy (becomes more important in the late game)

Thanks Paul and Aneurin. Smile

Also, can I ask which sets of objectives we will be using?

All the stage 1, stage 2 and secret objectives from the base game and Shattered Empire?
Preliminary Objectives from Shards of the Throne?
Special Objectives from Shattered Empire?

Thanks.

Yes - any way to get VPs and speed up the game...

You will get dealt your preliminary after galaxy setup.
Once that preliminary is complete you will get your secret objective.
If either is discussed/revealed before you claim it - you lose it.

Special object objectives will be put on the board after galaxy setup and before preliminaries are dealt.

I've now read the required parts of the original rules and the first expansion. I can confirm that by the time the game has finished, I might understand some of where it went wrong. This feels like doing academic research. Shocked

It's an investment in time! Don't forget to bring some snacks and drinks people. It'll be a long day Wink.

We usually order pizzas for when it's finished. Usually £5-7 each...

As someone who has played only a few times and learned how to play fairly recently, I'd say that the volume of rules felt a bit overwhelming. However, the actual mechanics of play are pretty simple and you'll get into it after a couple of turns.

I'm heading to Costco tomorrow so will try to get some sandwiches/wraps in for lunch if they have some. And pizza takeout in the evening sounds good. Hopefully Kat will find us another deal :-)

For me, I felt the video tutorials were a great way to learn the game. The more I'm starting to wrap my head around the mechanics of the game, the more I'm liking it. Here's a couple of pretty decent tutorial series (YouTube playlists) for the game...

Hope that helps!

We've got about 3cm of snow here. For those coming by car I'd suggest parking on Hemper Lane as it's a bus route and may get gritted (my road won't).

Safe journey everybody!

Good game yesterday! Thanks for coming everyone and congrats to Tom on a fine victory! Special mention has to go to John and Sam who played brilliantly as first-timers (John - your ruthlessness will, I'm sure, be repayed in full in future games). And, of course, to Jamie's clipboard which I hope will become a regular fixture.

It was such a good day, and thanks very much for hosting and everything you set up. You had such a lovely home I couldn't help but take the opportunity of visiting it in-game too.

I would like to point out that you were the only person I actually attacked properly though, for all my bluster and threats to Jamie. I feel like I could have done more in the game to be honest, but I guess that's normal for a first timer. I kept missing opportunities to get more command counters that I desperately needed, which had the knock on effect of me not being able to do as many actions as I needed, so I couldn't build ships and skirmish for tech.

Even now I'm not convinced I know all the rules and little bits going on. But I'd definitely play Nekro again given the opportunity, although it would be interesting to see how my "method playing" would work with a peaceful trade race.

Well, debts need to be settled; and you know what they say about a Lanister...

Just sayin'

Anyhow, I could go on and on about the game yesterday, but despite losing I really enjoyed it, it's a brilliant game and I'm really starting to warm to it. There are just so many faceats to it though, it's a little overbearing and it will take me a good few more game to get my head around it. I felt like I made tons of mistakes, errors, miscalculations in our game yesterday; loads things I should have done differently. There's a ton to learn; not least in terms of the meta-game / social aspects, of not pissing people off and making too many enemies...

Thanks again to Paul for hosting, and Aneurin for supplying the game with perfect sized boxes, and all you other gentlemen (and John) for playing!

Photos to follow...

Yep, sign me up for the next one. Some of your asses need a retaliatory kicking! :p

Photos seem a bit blurry; they're pretty much in order though. Would have liked to have taken one after every round; or maybe after every time I had a go. Also, we could have set a video camera up, and maybe done a fast-foward time-lapse type thing. Just an idea!

Stop motion of the game board would be super interesting! I think the difficulty is finding a space for a tripod with a nice clear view. But be my guest if you want to set something up next time.

When Aneurin is back in the country then we'll try to figure out a date for the next session of galactic fun. Probably some time in April.

Many thanks for hosting. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

I was really chuffed to win but had really good luck (mostly). I was the dreadnaught race and my Primary Ojective was to get all my dreadnaughts on the board. Then my Special Objective was to hold 6 planets with tech abilites, 4 of which were adjacent to my home system.

I thought John played really well as the Nekro virus (they are really hard to play). Jamie, as the Hacan, played to his racial special abilities well (bribing with the masses of trade goods he was getting) but alas not with complete success. I also thought Neil was well placed to win with his mass of special fighters.

I was really pleased with how I managed my command counters, using the secondary of leadership all but one turn. Also I think the seconday of diplomacy is underated and will use it more. It just save so much time to obtain planet without have to actually go there.

TomW wrote:Jamie, as the Hacan, played to his racial special abilities well (bribing with the masses of trade goods he was getting) but alas not with complete success.

Hey Tom,

It may have worked out better for me, had I just exchanged both my 3 TG trade agreements for like trade agreements, and not used the secondary of trade (cancelling one trade agreement between two other players ... which netted me 1 TG every time I did so, but at what cost? not so good to make too many enemies).

On the subject of making too many enemies; I was thinking that's a key aspect of the meta game; if you're going to make enemies; it's probably better to make just 1 super enemy (dishing out a lot of pain, to one single player, who has limited capacity to hurt you back), than to make lots of little enemies (doing small harmful actions, that will breed lots of grudges).

Also, thought I was a bit unlucky with the hexes I started with (containing only 1 poor planet hex). Maybe we should consider doing some kind of semi-random hex distribution; like shuffle 16 decent planet hexes, then split to 8 piles of 2; then add 4 other random hexes to each of the 8 piles. So everyone has at least 2 good planet hexes. Just a suggestion, would prevent people being either super lucky or super unlucky, before the game even starts!

Can't wait to play again. Really liked it!
