Well that'll piss the University off... it still wants to build on that site. Although maybe a sign that it is actually running out of money?

Re: Good news re Uni Arms
Good news. I know I have a vested interest in University estates development but I would point out that demolishing the pub was only one of the three options presented in the master plan. The purpose of that document is to begin a process of consultation with all stakeholders on their proposals; the level of cynicism around the University led people to assume the pub's demolition was a sure thing, it wasn't.
At least we don't have to go through the new venue hunt again any time soon!

In fairness cynicism is entirly justified based on past performance... there have been lots of 'paper exercises' in my 15 years at the place... If you hear that word -- you know.

Sorry, think that could have been me. Was posting from phone and nothing happened, even though I hit send multiple times.

Its also worth remembering that the Uni purchased the old Hendersons site to open a new pub... not too far away at all!
Re: Good news re Uni Arms
Despite a few niggles I like the Uni Arms a lot as our home and would hate to move again - so fingers crossed!

Me too Dave, I think it's a great fit for us. Glad we moved here.

Re: Good news re Uni Arms
It is a great spot but often we aren't fitting as well as we used to with the larger member base we're getting.
Would it be possible to get the darts room reserved with the main room? Last few weeks have been pretty rammed.

There's more to that than meets the eye (in a positive way). We'll talk next week!
I get the cynicism but I don't think it's entirely justified, continuing to judge an institution based on previous habits isn't always fair.
It's perhaps not a debate for this forum but in short: I'm glad the pub has been saved; I don't think the uni is always the bad guy; and, especially at a time of continued 'austerity', Universities continue to be directly and indirectly important to the local economy and sometimes there has to be a compromise.

Thanks, it is getting tight for space.
I think we could also be better at organising the tables/boards. Appreciate that's difficult with people often in before us but if we spend 5/10 minutes sorting the rooms before we begin then we'll fit in better.

The last two times I have come I've sat downstairs out of the way. There did not seem to be enough space to play a two player game. I haven't thought about coming back since.

James, sorry to hear that it's putting you off coming. We're looking at ways to solve it with the pub and we hope you'll rejoin us!

You spoil all the fun. And yes I know you are right. I'm just pushing... what really surprises though me is the massive disjoint in opinion between the professional services and the 'academics' at the University. But guess there is a long history there. Even so voluntary severance schemes at the same time as building investment doesn't make sense to me on any level. Probably why its a good job I'm not in charge
