X wing question ( i'm very new to the game)

Can you mix empire with new order ships? I 've purchased the orginal core set and it makes sense to me to buy the 2nd core set. But can i play these together? Keeping These tournments in mind btw.

So far they function exactly as if they are all empire and rebel respectively.
It would not surprise me at all if, in the future, once enough expansions are out following the movies, they introduce some rules that make the separate factions more significant.
If you ever want a game, let me know. I've got it all so if there's something you want to give a go you can try before you buy.
