I have Orleans, I also have the fan-made component upgrade, that allows you to play with a fifth player. It's a great game.

Probably not coming on Sunday though...

I can bring it tomorrow for you to borrow, if you like?

I'll be there. For playtesting this month, I will have another version of Nomads to try out if I can round up 1-4 willing volunteers. If anyone else has games to playtest, let me know.

Also, since we didn't manage to get the game-designy people together for the proposed meetup this month, I'll be bringing Guess Who (or a cheap knock-off version) for our mini design challenge, so if anyone wants to try coming up with a new game that uses the Guess Who components, we'll get to try it out on Sunday.

I'll be there, still trying to get Forbidden Stars to the table. Anyone interested in a game descended from such great predecessors as Game of Thrones and Starcraft?

We failed pretty good at getting that game design session sorted. We should try again in April!

Anyhow, I can't make it tomorrow, but I had an idea for Guess Who that involves both sides of the flippers. So when you get your opponent to flip down a certain flipper, on the back is a new rule that is implemented just for that player from now on. Or something like that.

Just wanted to get that out there. You can have that idea if you want Wink

Cheers for the brewing Tom and Ian. I've done a rule check on the collaboration as it seemed like it got me a lot of points. Turns out you can only fill with one type of ingredient per brewing action. That would have cost me quite a few points&$s at the end so I'm relegating myself to last place. So well done Tom! It is also more satisfying as we were all intuiting that you'd played the better game as well.

And thanks all for the epic amount of abstracts: Zertz, Hive, Go, Santorini

@folks-of-the-magic-realm: thoughts on Magic Realm? Whatever they were, I'm just curious to hear what your experience of playing it was.

I might have some longer thoughts at some point but in summary... It's an interesting game with plenty of options open to you in how you want to play it. The setup is complex to make the theme stick better (e.g. a bat doesn't appear where you heard a slither effect, and if you see smoke it might be a campfire or a dragon) but boy does that take a long time. I wonder if it would benefit from something like Mansions of Madness 2nd edition where the searching and monster placement is taken care of by an app?

Overall, I think that what the game would benefit from is one player who knows the game inside and out and can keep everything moving. I think you did a pretty good job of getting us going, Sam, and we all knew bits of the rules but if we'd had a veteran to tell us when we needed to put things out and work out which tables to roll on when and just remove some of the rules friction then it would be better. Basically a gamesmaster. Presumably this is what the digital experience is like.

Even with all that, I can't help but feel that combat would still be a slow process. It's a theoretically interesting system but doesn't appear to scale at all well for more than 1:1 battles.

Oh, I picked up your folder with the table print-outs in. I'll bring it on Tuesday.
