Christmas at The Riverside
Is there any appetite in arranging a Christmas dinner again this year. Noticed they had the menus up at the Riverside last night.
I'm happy to sort it out if there is some interest?

We would be up for it
Although we might avoid the salty Christmas pudding this year! That much take an established riverside pallette to appreciate... Once doused in the finest ale and scratchings!

Re: Christmas at The Riverside
The Christmas Menu for the Riverside is on their website:
http://www.riversidesheffield.co.uk/
3 course meal is £14.50
STARTERS
Proscitto, Melon and Fig Crown.
Confit Duck Leg with Stornaway Black Pudding.
Gravadlax Salmon.
Bubble and Squeak Cakes.
MAINS
Beef Shin Tian.
Roast Turkey with all the trimmings.
Herb Crusted Salmon with Asparagus Buerre Blanc.
Yule Tide Nut Roast.
DESSERTS
Classic Cherry Trifle.
Orange Chocolate Tart with Chantilly Cream.
Christmas Pudding with Brandy Butter Sauce.
Looks like I'll be going for the Gravadlax Salmon (as it's cured with Lagavoulin single malt), Beef shin and Cherry Triffle.
Get organising Neil... I'll see what the wife wants. Tuesday 6th of December or 20th would fall between gaming sessions this Christmas. Can I request we make it 8.30pm so I can make sure the little-uns are tucked up in bed? Ta muchly!
If you need a hand just shout!

What's the crack with this then? Get down early for food and then play games, or is it just a social affair?

Re: Christmas at The Riverside
Last year we made it purely social so that the (non-gaming) WAGS could come along...

Yep date ok so long as it is 8.30pm kick off. Do you think we will have time for even a game of dixit? Seem to remember the meal taking a time last year. Maybe if WAGS are there Morgan could finally break out shadow hunters!
You going Tuesday cal?

I can make the 6th/12, though it'll just be me as I doubt Jenny will be willing to take a day off for it, especially if Aneurin is there

Looks like a good menu.
I'd be happy to not play any games that night, judst relax and chat and eat. But, if we are going to play first then perhaps we shold book the upstairs room for privacy ?

Re: Christmas at The Riverside
Was playing Troyes with Morgan last night... we realised that the 6th of December is anormal gaming night... I got that wrong in an earlier post. It's the 13th that falls between gaming sessions.
Happy to do either but Morgan can't do the 6th now.

I love Troyes! Its my favourite game in my collection, but unfortunately it's not the best two player game.

Re: Christmas at The Riverside
A bit confusing at first, We got a couple of things wrong in the end but still very enjoyable.
We were buying dice off other people for 2 coins each.
We were also locking down the traders on the cards and only moving those in the 3 buildings! Last thing we got wrong was only doing 1 cathedral build at a time rather than upto 3.
Wouldn't mind playing again.

Re: Christmas at The Riverside
I think its a bit of a hard one on the first play due to the massive amount of options, and every time I teach it to someone I have to explain the buying dice thing several times. I still cant figure out the best tactic, although putting as many meeples on the cards as you can seems to be a pretty good one.

Re: Christmas at The Riverside
I'd be happy to help teach with you. I think I know the rules well enough after playing it.
I think thats what I like about the game. There is no clear strategy and the fact that you have 3!, 3!, 3! choices of tradesmen for the 3 buildings and then the randomised event deck means no two games are gonna play the same.
The thing that confused us is why they bothered with the bottom section of the board where the event cards go? We wondered what happened when we got more than 6 events in play... then read in the rules that the event area has no limit.
