Soooo - I'm trying to figure out...

I think its likely a combination of all 3, its a terrible kickstarter page, and a minimum pledge level of £100, I'll be surprised if he gets any backers...
If you check out his website link, thats another "interesting" site...

Re: Soooo - I'm trying to figure out...
Quote from the pitch:
It's Strengths
*It's fun *
*It's innovative *
*It's competitive *
Nevermind the fact that the first "It's" has a superfluous apostrophe (I'll try to keep my inner pedant in check), I love how this suggests that other games do not include, or at the very least strive to include 1. fun, 2. innovation, 3. some level of competition or goal - which are surely the absolute minimum of what every game design has in mind.
I reckon he's an avant garde internet-only comedian.

After 10 minutes of internet sleuthing, I'm going to say naive. Seems like a harmless bloke, but a bit of a dreamer. I suspect this is the latest in a long line of millionaire-making ideas.
I hope he comes to the Expo!

To be fair I've seen worse ideas and kickstarters....

The fact that the only other game he mentions is Monopoly... I'm guessing he hasn't got the slightest idea that euro games etc are popular again...

"the first thing I did was check out all board games,"
Didn't look very far did he?

Re: Soooo - I'm trying to figure out...
I contacted the guy requesting a copy of the rules and asking about the final design. He responded, saying that there were no further rules than those on the Kickstarter page but he will edit them into alphabetical order to make it more clear!?
Regarding the design, he says it's just a mock up, he's expecting to attract a big production company who will have their Art Department take care of the design. He's also going to pitch it on Shark Tank (the US version of Dragons' Den)! Which begs the question, why is he on Kickstarter?
I think he genuinely thinks he's on to a winner. I don't have the heart to give him my honest feedback...

He's had abit of a rant in the comments. I might just back it and tell him it's brilliant.

Re: Soooo - I'm trying to figure out...
He is seriously on a different planet... do you think he has even looked at the other kickstarters under tabletop games?
Re: Soooo - I'm trying to figure out...
I'm certain he hasn't. His experience of games seems to stretch as far as Monopoly and Ludo. He doesn't even seen to understand how Kickstarter works.Aneurin wrote:He is seriously on a different planet... do you think he has even looked at the other kickstarters under tabletop games?
I've sent him a very long and hopefully constructive email suggesting why he has attracted no bids. I've also sought to enlighten him regarding modern boardgaming and pointed him towards bgg and the expo for research and playtesting opportunities. Perhaps he'll come visit us one Tuesday to let us playtest.

Did he reply?
Re: Soooo - I'm trying to figure out...
He sent me a very polite reply, thanking be for my input, acknowledging that he was a little green, and then began telling me he had written 2 novels and the hardest part was the back cover blurb and that card games like Bridge were popular but Snap was more fun.Aneurin wrote:Did he reply?
I think he's a genuinely nice guy, but I wouldn't give him my money!

For the £4,965 pledge level you only get gold plated player tokens?! Not solid gold 3 inch high player tokens?

He seems to have listened to some of the feedback and he has changed his video. No longer is it a 10 minute life story but you now actually get to see the game and how to play it.

Mal is BACK!

It looks like he's listened to some of the advice he received from the community - he's reduced the pledge levels and appears to be planning on attending the Expo. However, his video has reverted to a familiar 10 minute monologue followed by a bizarre explanation of the game.
I really hope he makes it to the Expo - I'd love to meet him!

I wonder if he'll apply for the Wyvern's Lair.

The demo at the end is hilarious.
Also "Tell me a game that a 5 year old has as much chance of winning as his parents". Who wants to start?

Well that's 12 minutes and 24 seconds of my life I'll never get back. Luckily I'm at work. I feel a bit sorry for this guy, I can't imagine him doing very well at the expo with what is essentially a roll and move game. The walkthru section was extremely confusing too. It seemed to me that players could potentially be going around and around in circles forever until they got the right card that turned them the correct way. No wonder his grandkids just want to play on their phones.

I can imagine them rolling their eyes as Granddad starts on another one of his stories!
