Funny you should say that, I've actually already decided! Going to go with Carcasonne. Everyone seems to love it, I like the tile placing aspect of it and most importantly it seems to be accessible enough for my wife to want to play without having to drown her with rules, dice and whatever else.

It's a good gateway game that one. For what it's worth the iOS app is excellent too...

First Pandemic, then Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride and Catan - steady slope downwards to a full closet of games and a new house

Re: Introduce your self
I've got Ticket to Ride Europe on my phone/ipad. I love it, that's definitely on the list to purchase but for now I'm content with it on my phone.
Catan, I think, is one I'd have to play it before I made my mind up. Can it be played with 2 people? I thought you needed 3 at least.
Also I've seen the Carcasonne app, it's bloody expensive though. £8 last time I checked (I think). I don't think I've ever payed more than £3 for an iphone app. Can you play others online? If you can, does it require both players to be online at the same time and complete the game in one go or can it be played asynchronously?

Re: Introduce your self
Carcassonne is indeed a bit on the pricey side, even more so once you start adding in DLC...
It supports local and internet MP (including Async MP) and is a universal app so works on phone and iPad.
Regardless of the merit of the game itself, I consider iOS Carcassonne to be pretty much the shining example of how to implement a boardgame on a tablet...
Catan - you're quite right, needs three people to play.

Re: Introduce your self
In which case Catan wouldn't get played too often until we start firing out kids and then grow them long enough to offer sufficient challenge. I also suspect you lot are perhaps beyond lowly Catan by now!
That's good to know about Carcasonne though, thanks. Perhaps its one for when (if) it goes on sale or if I end up falling in love with the game after I buy the physical version.
It's just occurred to me that I've been hijacking this thread! Sorry!

You guys still play it then? Would have thought you'd be past the so called "gateway" stuff?

At the club there is a wide variety of tastes (and of course moods). Don't often see Carcassonne being played but Catan show up quite a bit
Re: Introduce your self
Awesome. I hope to get to have a game at some point then.

Re: Introduce your self
We are getting new members weekly at the moment so gateway games often get dusted off...
Re: Introduce your self
There are always new people joining so "gateway" games get fairly regular run-outs - we had a "gateway game" week recently (although I didn't realise and went full on Euro). Plus, the likes of Catan, TTR, Carcassone are excellent games with lots of replay ability, even more so if you start adding expansions.

Re: Introduce your self
Hiya, I'm Davey
Pretty new to the board game world after playing a bunch with friends from back home (originally from Widnes in the North West but lived in Sheffield for 12 years). Occasionally we play stuff online or when I go back there but I've found that my friends in Sheff aren't as keen as I am to try the new stuff (although I've got them into Exploding Kittens so that's a start!)
So yeah, I've got a small collection which is ever growing but looking to meet some new people to play them with and expand my horizons when it comes to what's out there. hopefully see some of you guys later tonight!

Welcome Davey, hope you enjoy the club
As an aside I come from your neck of the woods too - I'm from Frodsham originally (although I haven't been back in many years)

Re: Introduce your self
Hi all. My name is Jonathan, I turned up last night with my partner Jenny and we had a good time. My board game experience is somewhat classical, but I have recently got into playing x-wing minatures, so give me a shout if you want a game. I can see the Tuesday night becoming a regular thing. See you there.

There's a bunch of us at the club who play X-Wing - some casually, some more seriously. Kes is our resident X-Wing obsessive so you should speak to him, but I'm also happy to give you a game sometime.
There's also a group that play every Monday night at the Wargames Emporium. They're a friendly bunch (ask for Graham) and they'd also be very happy to help you out getting started.
